Contratto Americano Rosso is a Piedmontese Americano apéritif from Contratto in Canelli, Italy — produced from recipes dating to the 1890s. The Americano category sits between vermouth and bitter, with a wine base aromatized with botanicals including the bittering agent gentian or quassia, producing the structural bitterness that defines the classic Americano-and-soda highball.
The Contratto Americano restores a category that was foundational to the Italian apéritif tradition before commodity products dominated the market. Served over ice with soda water and a citrus twist, it produces a refreshing, structurally bitter apéritif. Also useful in classic cocktail preparations where Americano historically appeared.
