Braulio is the great alpine amaro of Bormio, a mountain town in the Stelvio National Park of Lombardy near the Swiss border. Created in 1875 by pharmacist Francesco Peloni, it is made from a proprietary blend of alpine herbs, including gentian root, juniper, yarrow and wormwood, many gathered in the surrounding mountains, and aged for two years in Slavonian oak casks in cellars beneath the town. Bottled at 21% ABV (42 proof) in a 1-liter bottle.
Braulio pours amber-brown with reddish glints. The nose is earthy gentian, wood and roots with juniper, aromatic herbs and a wormwood finish. The palate is robust and intense, herbal and full of essential oils, with classic wood and root notes and a lingering, pleasant bitterness that builds to a persistent aftertaste. Serve it neat or over ice as a digestivo, or in a highball with soda and lemon. A ski-lodge legend.
