Bodegas El Nido Clo 2022
One of Spain’s most prestigious reds El Nido’s mirror-image sibling, flipping the blend on its head.
Grape Varietals & Region: A blend of Mourvdre (Monastrell, Mataro) and Cabernet Sauvignon the inverse of El Nido’s own composition grown in the Aragona Valley in the highlands of Jumilla, Spain. The same tenacious old vines pierce stony soils into coarse limestone and sandy strips below, on a north-facing, low-rainfall slope that concentrates the fruit.
Taste Profile: Picota cherry colour. Powerful, concentrated aromas of ripe cassis, dark cherry, toasted coffee and liquorice. Robust and flavoursome, with jammy black fruit wrapped in oak, cocoa and sweet liquorice a full, fleshy mouthfeel with luscious tannins and a persistent, spicy jam finish.
Winemaking Process: The wine ferments, then ages 24 months in French and American oak barrels before bottling in line with the minimum ageing required for Spain’s Crianza classification.
Winemaker: Bodegas El Nido is a joint project between Australian winemaker Chris Ringland, Spanish importer Jorge Ordez and the Gil family of Bodegas Juan Gil, founded in 2002 to push Jumilla’s quality revolution forward. Clo and El Nido mirror each other in composition Clo leads with Monastrell, El Nido with Cabernet Sauvignon both built from the same historic vines the Gil family’s great-grandfather first planted generations ago.
